This seems to be an on-going issue here on Newsvine. It seems as if there are people who don't care about the subject matter of some articles. They don't seem to like the political bent of some seeds either. Then there are those who hate polls. And in these cases they vote to collapse them. What I can't understand is, why?
I mean, if you see an article, seed or poll and you object to the subject matter or the person seeding it or the person who wrote it, then why are you unable to just pass it by? It's not like it's required as part of your membership here on Newsvine to like or even read everything you see. It's not as if you have agreed to accept whatever is posted without offense. If I see an article or a poll or a seed by someone I know I already disagree with, I have the maturity to just not open it or respond to it. Why is that so hard for some people?
I know there are many people who don't like my articles or seeds or polls, yet they seem to think that they have some sort of mission in life to collapse them. Fine. I accept that. It's not like I'm their only target. There are many leftist liberals who do everything they can to collapse anything, article, poll or comment of a person they think of as right wing and that's childish. Yet no more childish then when those on the right do it to those they disagree with and they do
There are those on Newsvine who think that a written article must reach a certain (in their own mind) number of characters to qualify as a"real" article. They seem to think that validity is somehow justified by length. I would remind them that some of the most profound words were few in number, yet many long comments are just long winded and useless and that they have no right to judge the difference. The inaugural speech of John Fitzgerald Kennedy lasted less then 14 minutes, but moved a world. Yet William Henry Harrison gave a speech that lasted more then 2 hours and died from pneumonia last then a month later.
There are many members of Newsvine that I don't agree with or like and I see their articles, seeds and polls when I come to this site. When I recognize that they hold opinions that I most likely disagree with, I pass them by. I don't go to their polls and vote against them. I don't go to their seeds or articles and vote to collapse them. These are the actions of an adult. How hard is this to do? How hard is it to not act like a spoiled child and go to their posting to vote to collapse them? Why must some posters (and you know who you are) try to use the rules of Newsvine to try to suppress the postings of opinions they don't like or (even more like a 10 year old) the opinions of someone they don't like.
Personally, I blame their parents. I think that there are many long time posters who have become accustomed to having their way with this site because they think they have some sort of seniority. Yet they are no different then some new users who think they have the right to try to shut down opinions they disagree with. Both are extremely childish, though I doubt they see it in themselves.
So (and I won't put it into a poll as that seems to be a sore point with some of the old-timers), why do you vote to collapse an article, poll or seed? Is it because you think it violates the CoH? Is it because you don't like the subject matter and don't want it discussed because you're afraid of it? Is it because you just don't like the person posting and want them to go away? It seems to me (at the determent of Newsvine) that the last two have taken over.
Talk to me.
