I have been a member of Newsvine since July of 2008, several months before Senator Barack Obama was elected by the American people as our President. However, since then, I have seen those who dislike him for whatever reasons derisively refer to him as "The Messiah" or "The Chosen One" and I have to admit I don't know where they came up with that. I mean I understand that it's meant as an insult, but where does it come from? Has anyone of his supporters ever referred to him that way? I've been a supporter of his since before his speech at the 2004 Democratic Nation Convention and I have never referred to him or thought of him in that manner. Who would?
I think that it comes from the Christian aspect of the right wing of the Republican Party. In Christianity the person (God?) you follow is infallible. They are incapable of making a mistakes. When debating a person from the GOP you run across this blockage constantly. George W. Bush was their leader and therefore George W. Bush was perfect. He was incapable of making a mistake and (if you try to point one to of his mistakes or question his decisions in any manner) you are met with a fanaticism of religious proportions. They defend every single decision or thought he ever expressed, because that's what they need to think. If you question him or his father or Reagan, then (to them) it's no different then questioning Christ. They see it as an attack on the very faith that they follow. I think that far too many people in today's GOP see politics as not as much about what is or is not right for the people of America, as much as they see it as a religious calling.
On the left, however, we see our leaders as simple human beings. Fallible and capable of mistakes and errors. We see them as normal men and women that need to be constantly assessed and tested and considered as to if we want them to continue to represent us. Sometimes some of them fall short of our expectations and we replace them. Still, as incredibly silly as it looks, those on the right wing chortle with childish laughter when we have found one of our own wanting, as if that's a surprise. Our leaders are human and wanting to do what is right for America. They are not gods, as the right sees their leaders.
So, what do you think? Do you think that the GOP attempts to insult the President by referring to him as "The Messiah" and/or "The chosen one"? Why do you think they do so? Do you think that it's because they basically worship their leaders and can't understand why we on the left don't?
