In a bit over a week a new Sherlock Holmes movie will debut, starring Robert Downey Jr as Holmes and Jude Law as Doctor Watson. Over the years there have been many great actors who have portrayed Holmes. Actors as diverse as Stewart Granger, Charlton Heston, Matt Frewer, Peter Cushing, Christopher Plummer and Frank Langella have been Holmes, but IMHO none of them have been Holmes as much as Basil Rathbone was. When I think of Holmes and Watson I think of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce and no others.
When I think of Sherlock Holmes films I think of "Terror by Night" and "The Woman in Green" and "The Scarlet Claw" and "Dressed to Kill". I wonder if it's wise for even as a talented actor as Robert Downey Jr to take on such an iconic role? Can even as a quirky of an actor as he do it justice? I hope so.
As much as I think that Basil Rathbone IS the definitive Sherlock Holmes, I'm willing to give Robert Downey Jr a fair chance at the role too. That said, there is not a snowball's chance in hell that Jude Law can pull off Doctor Watson and that alone may be the undoing of this film. Still, we shall see.
So, what do you think? Can he pull it off or will this be a big stumble for Downey Jr? Can Law pull off Watson or do you think he'll fall on his face and drag the film down with him? Who do you think should play these roles if not these two if a studio was insistent on doing a new Sherlock Holmes movie?
