Police in northern New Jersey needed pepper spray to thwart a groundhog on the attack. Boonton resident Alex Scott told police the rodent chased him when he entered his garage and tried to get his truck. Police Sgt. Mike Danyo and Officer Paul Ryan said the groundhog went on the attack when they arrived.

Why did they have to kill it? The story doesn't say he bit anyone.

Ground hogs don't normally (maybe never) attack people, so rabies is most likely indicated. Testing for rabies requires that part of the brain be removed for testing. The animal must be euthanized. Apparently you never watched "Ole Yeller".

They could have quarantined the animal and watched for symptoms.

A groundhog attacking and attempting to bite someone is a significant sympton of stage two of rabies. The 2nd stage is followed within a couple of days with stage 3, which is considered too inhumane to allow an animal to suffer. Even the 2nd stage is thought to be a product of severe pain upon the infected's nervous system. Rabies cannot be reversed when the 2nd stage has been entered. The 1st stage can be from days to months, depending upon how the infection occurred.

Rabies is a serious problem and is a growing problem in the U.S. CDC

So did the cops go into the groundhogs house and ask for ID first?

;)

Sorry, couldn't resist. Poor little thing! :(

Sounds to me like they ought to be spraying the rabbis in "Joirsey.". But then they'd have to deal with B'nai B'rinth and all. Better to pick on the lowly rodents, I guess.

Oh Dear God, first the Mass. Police officer who arrested a disorderly black Harvard professor and according to President Obama acted "stupidly" in doing so and now a New Jersey Police officer uses pepper spray on a disorderly grounghog to subdue it, which will probably make someone from PETA mad as hell. What is going on with the cops in America these days ??!!
